Prompt Driven Development (PDD): The Last Programming Language™. Prompt files are source; code is generated output.
PDD (Prompt-Driven Development) is a Claude Code plugin and CLI tool that treats `.prompt` files as the primary source code, with traditional language implementations (Python, TypeScript, Go, etc.) as generated artifacts. It provides workflows for generating code from prompts, creating tests, fixing bugs, and keeping prompts synchronized with code changes. PDD enables developers to author durable intent and constraints in prompts, then compile them into any target language while maintaining prompts as the source of truth. The plugin integrates with GitHub issues for automated feature implementation and bug fixing.
Key Features
Use Cases
- 01Implementing GitHub feature requests automatically with 13-step agentic workflow
- 02Generating failing tests from bug reports and auto-fixing the issues
- 03Maintaining prompt-code synchronization in CI pipelines with auto-heal
- 04Creating reusable code modules with tests from natural language specifications
- 05Refactoring large modules by splitting prompts and regenerating implementations
- 06Running project health checks to detect missing deps, build errors, and failing tests

pdd — FAQ
What is PDD and what does it do?+
PDD (Prompt-Driven Development) is a prompt-native programming system where .prompt files are the authoritative source code and traditional language implementations (Python, TypeScript, etc.) are generated artifacts. It provides CLI commands and agentic workflows for generating code from prompts, testing, fixing bugs, and keeping prompts synchronized with code changes.
How do I install and set up PDD?+
Install via uv (recommended): `uv tool install pdd-cli`, then run `pdd setup` to configure API keys and detect agentic CLI tools. Alternatively install with pip: `pip install pdd-cli`. On macOS you'll need Xcode Command Line Tools and Python 3.12+.
Which AI clients and providers does PDD work with?+
PDD works with Claude Code, Gemini/Antigravity CLI, OpenAI Codex CLI, and OpenCode CLI for agentic workflows. For direct API calls it supports Anthropic, OpenAI, Google (Gemini/Vertex), DeepSeek, GitHub Copilot, and other LiteLLM-supported providers.
What API keys or credentials do I need?+
For basic usage you need at least one LLM provider API key (ANTHROPIC_API_KEY, OPENAI_API_KEY, GEMINI_API_KEY, etc.). For GitHub issue workflows you need the gh CLI authenticated. Agentic workflows require one of: Claude Code (claude auth login or ANTHROPIC_API_KEY), Antigravity/Gemini CLI (OAuth or GOOGLE_API_KEY), Codex CLI (codex login or OPENAI_API_KEY), or OpenCode CLI.
Is PDD free to use?+
The PDD CLI tool itself is open source and free. However, you'll incur costs from the underlying LLM providers (Claude, GPT, Gemini, etc.) based on token usage. PDD includes cost tracking (--output-cost) and budget controls (--budget) to manage expenses.
How do I use PDD with GitHub issues?+
PDD can implement features from issues with `pdd change <issue-url>`, generate architecture from PRDs with `pdd generate <issue-url>`, create failing tests for bugs with `pdd bug <issue-url>`, and fix failing tests with `pdd fix <issue-url>`. These commands run multi-step agentic workflows and create PRs automatically.
