obsidian-mind
A self-organizing Obsidian vault that gives AI coding agents persistent memory. Claude Code, Codex CLI, Gemini CLI.
Obsidian Mind is a self-organizing Obsidian vault template that provides AI coding agents with persistent, graph-based memory across sessions. It works with Claude Code, Codex CLI, and Gemini CLI through lifecycle hooks that automatically classify, route, and link notes as conversations happen. The vault maintains context on goals, decisions, people, projects, and performance across all sessions, while optional QMD semantic search enables meaning-based retrieval without cloud dependencies.
Key Features
Use Cases
- 01Maintaining context across coding sessions so AI agents remember past decisions, goals, and project state
- 02Automatically filing decisions, incidents, 1:1 meetings, and wins into a structured knowledge graph during natural conversation
- 03Preparing for performance reviews by aggregating competency evidence, brag doc entries, and peer feedback from vault backlinks
- 04Capturing and reconstructing incidents from Slack threads with full timeline, people profiles, and root cause analysis
- 05Searching and reasoning over design decisions from other repositories via the MCP server while working in any codebase
- 06Running daily standup briefings that load North Star goals, active work, git changes, and open tasks automatically

obsidian-mind — FAQ
What is Obsidian Mind?+
Obsidian Mind is a template for an Obsidian vault that gives AI coding agents persistent memory. It uses lifecycle hooks to automatically classify and file notes as you talk, maintaining context on goals, decisions, people, and projects across all sessions.
How do I install Obsidian Mind?+
Install via ShardMind package manager (npm install -g shardmind, then shardmind install github:breferrari/obsidian-mind in a new folder), or clone the repo directly (git clone https://github.com/breferrari/obsidian-mind.git). Then open the folder as an Obsidian vault, enable Obsidian CLI in settings, and run your AI agent (claude, codex, or gemini) from the vault directory.
Which AI clients work with Obsidian Mind?+
Full support for Claude Code with hooks, commands, and sub-agents working out of the box. Codex CLI and Gemini CLI work with hooks and commands through their respective config files. Other agents (Cursor, Windsurf, GitHub Copilot) can read the vault conventions but hook support varies.
Do I need API keys or paid services?+
You need Obsidian (free) and an AI coding agent CLI (Claude Code, Codex CLI, or Gemini CLI) which use their respective API keys. Optional QMD semantic search runs three small models locally with no API key, no per-query cost, and works offline.
What are the prerequisites?+
Obsidian 1.12+ for CLI support, Node 22+ LTS for hook scripts, Git for version history, and an AI coding agent. QMD semantic search is optional but recommended for better retrieval.
Is Obsidian Mind free?+
Yes, the vault template is MIT licensed and free. You pay only for the AI agent API usage (Claude, OpenAI, or Gemini) based on your existing account.
